First lousy timing, then trauma get between the couple at the center of this melodramatic second chance romance from Lucas (The Last Goodbye). Love ignites almost instantly when Olivia “Lili” Everett and Ben Robertson meet. After spending two over-the-top romantic days together, Ben, a travel photographer, leaves for his next destination, but he promises to meet Lili again in exactly one year. When this plan falls through, however, Lili is left picking up the pieces of her broken heart. Ben had a good reason for standing her up, but, five years later, it’s still one of his greatest regrets. He’s now back in his Scottish hometown, having given up photography to raise his young niece, Willow, after the death of his sister (for which he blames himself), when he sees a woman he’s sure is Lili and seizes a chance to make it right. But the woman claims her name is Alice—and that she has no other memory of who she is. Ben is determined to help, and together the pair discover that Alice is suffering from dissociative amnesia due to extreme trauma. From there, Lucas delves into the devastating impact of psychological and sexual abuse while painting an admirable portrait of the heroine’s strength. Colleen Hoover fans will enjoy this one.
